Din punct de vedere instrumental, Forest of Shadows a progresat (ajung\u00e2nd la o maturitate manierist\u0103, atent\u0103 la detalii); de exemplu, dac\u0103 \u00eenainte (\u00een <i>Under the Dying Sun <\/i>sau <i>Where Dreams Turn to Dust<\/i>) dialogul dintre extreme era radical, cu schimb\u0103ri bru\u015fte de ritm, care asigura violentarea benefic\u0103 a ascult\u0103torului \u2013 acum produsul final este mai coerent, mai <i>soft<\/i>, pu\u0163in clasicizat. <!--more--> Altfel spus, dac\u0103 <i>Where Dreans Turn to Dust<\/i> (2001) poate fi caracterizat drept muzic\u0103 de medita\u0163ie pentru gropari (cu o capodoper\u0103 epic\u0103 suprem\u0103, <i>Wish<\/i>, ce combin\u0103 perfect mesajul cu instrumenta\u0163ia), <i>Six Waves of Woe <\/i>seam\u0103n\u0103 cu un audio-book motiva\u0163ional pentru catatonici, sau, ca s\u0103 continu\u0103m compara\u0163ia precedent\u0103, cu un album mortuar, pentru beneficiul celor care \u015fi-au pus cap\u0103t zilelor \u015fi vor s\u0103 aib\u0103 un <i>trip<\/i> mai relaxant. Mai trebuie ad\u0103ugat ca la nivel de mesaj (cu excep\u0163ia piesei <i>Moments in Solitude<\/i>), albumul prezint\u0103 anumite sc\u0103deri \u2013 exist\u0103 \u015fi versuri banale (care arunc\u0103 textul \u00een zona pop: \u201cPlease tell me why I can\u00b4t be there\/ To welcome another beautiful day\/ To taste the sweet honey of life\u201d). Cu toate acestea, Forest of Shadows \u00ee\u015fi p\u0103streaz\u0103 semn\u0103tura caracteristic\u0103 (monotonie exploratoare + simplitate obsesiv\u0103), cre\u00e2nd o muzic\u0103 pentru oamenii r\u0103stigni\u0163i pe canapea, \u0163intui\u0163i de propriile lor depresii. Acest diagnoztic poate fi \u00een\u015fel\u0103tor: lentoarea nu este un prilej pentru torpoare \u015fi lene spiritual\u0103, paradoxal monomania av\u00e2nd un caracter ascensional, prilejuind un <i>inner trip<\/i>.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u00cen prima pies\u0103, <i>Submission<\/i>, accentul este pus pe atmosfer\u0103, nu pe text. Ca observa\u0163ie general\u0103 pentru \u00eentregul album, versurile sunt fragmentate, intonate uneori cu jum\u0103tate de voce, ca \u015fi cum lipse\u015fte hot\u0103r\u00e2rea de a fi rostite r\u0103spicat \u015fi \u201eteribilist\u201d. Mesajul primului single (\u201cThere, in the radiance of deceit\/ Facing final submission\u201d) pune accentul pe dezam\u0103girea unui subiect, asupra c\u0103ruia se str\u00e2nge la\u0163ul infernal, ce nu se mai poate ap\u0103ra \u00een fa\u0163a for\u0163elor cotropitoare; asemenea unui condamnat, care presimte \u00eentr-un <i>lento<\/i> macabru articularea securii c\u0103l\u0103ului. <i>Selfdestructive<\/i> posed\u0103 o arhitectur\u0103 complex\u0103; solistul folose\u015fte trei intona\u0163ii: una intimist\u0103 (asemenea unei sirene, care-\u015fi arunc\u0103 n\u0103vodul), alta de o subtilitate romantic\u0103 \u015fi, \u00een fine, ultima agresiv\u0103, catastrofist\u0103, autentic\u0103. Am impresia c\u0103 nu \u00eencepem s\u0103-l ascult\u0103m cu adev\u0103rat dec\u00e2t atunci c\u00e2nd se exprim\u0103 cu a treia voce. &#206;n <i>Detached<\/i> exist\u0103 schimb\u0103ri de ritm geniale; de\u015fi piesa are o coeziune aproape clasic\u0103, armonia te trece gradual de pe o frecven\u0163\u0103 pe alta. A patra pies\u0103, <i>Moments in Solitude<\/i>, o adev\u0103rat\u0103 art\u0103 poetic\u0103 sau un manifest psihopatologic, mi se pare reu\u015fita clar\u0103, evident\u0103 a albumului. De la observa\u0163ii existen\u0163iale (\u201cThis withering grey existence\/ A paradise for a sleepwalking kind\u201d \u2013 descoperirea con\u015ftiin\u0163ei de sine ca diferen\u0163iere fa\u0163\u0103 de incon\u015ftien\u0163a generalizat\u0103), la \u00eempuns\u0103turi ritmice ce amintesc de primele e.p.-uri, la expansivitatea quasi-delirant\u0103 a refrenului (\u201eTo where I rule my own life\/ A kingdom for myself\/ A place without fear\/ And with no need of your gods\/ That\u00b4s where I find eternal peace\/ Somewhere among nowhere\u201d), <i>Moments in Solitude<\/i> este <i>trademark<\/i>-ul evolu\u0163iei muzicale a trupei.
