Awaken in Darkness<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sunday morning. We<\/p>\n

had gone to sleep in the promise<\/p>\n

we’d awaken in two hours,<\/p>\n

spend the early darkness<\/p>\n

immersing one another in the untold<\/p>\n

pleasures of hotel-room bed<\/p>\n

mornings. My eyes open,<\/p>\n

and you are there, your face<\/p>\n

relaxed in sleep, small smile<\/p>\n

arising from your dream. You wake<\/p>\n

at my touch. We are sore, but eager:<\/p>\n

hours stretch before us, languid,<\/p>\n

pregnant with the promise of sweat,<\/p>\n

exertion, delicious heights<\/p>\n

of dizzy lust. Only after our first<\/p>\n

kiss do we check the clock;<\/p>\n

the pulled shade lied. Instead<\/p>\n

of two hours, we’ve slept six,<\/p>\n

and the day prods us to begin<\/p>\n

it, get up, shower.<\/p>\n

Not yet;<\/p>\n

we have stolen this morning<\/p>\n

together, as we must sometimes;<\/p>\n

we can push the day, its insistence,<\/p>\n

back a while. Come here, my darling,<\/p>\n

let’s pretend it’s four AM.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Diver<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The homeless population<\/p>\n

decreases as pot roast<\/p>\n

and maggot-ridden roadkill<\/p>\n

decay in landfills.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Like raccoons, the homeless<\/p>\n

always wash their food<\/p>\n

before consumption<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

even if it’s only<\/p>\n

in the muck-strewn Delaware<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tea<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

the world’s bitter dregs<\/p>\n

mingled with a few sharp leaves<\/p>\n

dribble from the teacup<\/p>\n

of the universe<\/p>\n

crumbs fall<\/p>\n

drops on the table of god<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

like all cracked cups<\/p>\n

it must be discarded<\/p>\n

a new one used<\/p>\n

when company<\/p>\n

comes to dinner<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

after fevered love<\/p>\n

the recent combatants<\/p>\n

desire a pot<\/p>\n

of liquid calmness<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

as as woman pours<\/p>\n

from kettle into pot<\/p>\n

one lone drop spills<\/p>\n
