{"id":12258,"date":"2018-07-18T08:01:37","date_gmt":"2018-07-18T06:01:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/egophobia.ro\/?p=12258"},"modified":"2018-07-13T15:05:23","modified_gmt":"2018-07-13T13:05:23","slug":"mercy-brown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/egophobia.ro\/?p=12258","title":{"rendered":"Mercy Brown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\">by Oliviu Cr\u00e2znic<strong><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>A poem inspired by documented events of 1892`s Rhode Island<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>I<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I hear the baby crying: there`s someone at the window;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The moonlight fades to pale \u2013 she`s getting in, alas!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is indeed her home, but she\u2019s not welcome here;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">My antidote to darkness: one bullett through the glass.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I search around the cabin: no bleeder lying near;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One ravencall to midnight \u2013 the hour of the dead&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The baby\u2019s crying bitter; my statement, loud and clear:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cForget the infant`s cradle, and please take me instead!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">True was the gruesome rumour about the coming madness;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Her face I can`t remember, her eyes \u2013 weren`t both green?&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The shroud is moving forward; my mindfulness betrays me<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For she is not my daughter, and she has never been.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/vgy.me\/cALDc6.jpg?w=812&#038;ssl=1\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>II<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cMay be some sort of witchcraft\u201d \u2013 I say to the physician&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The good Doctor seems tired; sad is our way ahead:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to the churchyard, her casket we must open<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And then we must ensure that Mercy Brown stays dead!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The dim light of the morning reveals her tortured body<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And then the Doctor stakes her \u2013 oh, that unshared sigh!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The hypocrite I am, she was my loving child;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">No kiss upon her forehead before our grim good-bye\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I knew it all the time: she did resist her hunger;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She did recall our cabin, her former life therein;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And yet we had to waste her: the hazards were too many&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She lived and died white pure, I live and die in sin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>About the author:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>OLIVIU CR\u00c2ZNIC <\/strong>[photo by Mihaela Nazarie] is a Romanian (Transylvanian) national and international awarded novelist, poet, translator, literary critic, anthologist, conferee, former member of \u201cImagicopter: The Author\/Artist Cooperative\u201d (2012-2017) and legal advisor. Born in 1978; his parents, Oliviu and Dorothea, are both certified and distinguished Romanian Language and Literature teachers. He graduated from Faculty of Law with a thesis on Forensic Science (2001) and from Pro Medierea Association`s Conflict Resolution course (2008). His literary career began in 2010, when he published the celebrated Gothic novel <em>&#8230;And Then the Nightmare Came at Last<\/em> (Vremea Publishing House). His short stories and novellettes were published alongside those of famous contemporary (George R.R. Martin) or classic (Algernon Blackwood, Arthur Conan Doyle, Robert E. Howard, Rudyard Kipling, H.P. Lovecraft, Guy de Maupassant, Saki) writers. In 2015, he published the acclaimed short story collection <em>The Witching Hour<\/em> (Crux Publishing House). He is mentioned in <em>The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction<\/em> (J. Clute, P. Nicholls) and literary analysis on his works appeared in academic journals such as <em>Equinox Journal<\/em> (Faculty of Letters, \u201cBabe\u0219-Bolyai\u201d University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania). He appeared in Ciprian Mitoceanu`s novellette <em>The Redemption<\/em> (as a literary character) and on the Travel Channel show <em>Expedition Unknown<\/em> (as a vampire expert). He was invited to speak on various literary themes and topics at Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature \u2013 University of Bucharest, at Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures \u2013 \u201cDimitrie Cantemir\u201d Christian University (alongside Ana-Maria Negril\u0103, PhD), and at Romanian Academy (Romanian Committee for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology). He acted as the moderator of Bucharest International Literature Festival \u2013 special Science Fiction &amp; Fantasy evening (2014).
