Meat People<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The foreign affairs begin to hurt. They call each<\/p>\n

other repeatedly, the phone bills fat as children. ‘Look,<\/p>\n

baby,’ he says. ‘Look, baby,’ he says. And for all the<\/p>\n

looking there ought to be a view wide as fourteen hills, four<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

windows. What do you need? Twice daily the garbage scow,<\/p>\n

praised by white gulls, turns up at Fresh Kills. The bird of<\/p>\n

love whacks her head. Never very quick with the badminton<\/p>\n

racket? Too many holes. Must one go entirely through<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

one’s head? He took off his shoes so his feet could<\/p>\n

expand, fill the space left by retreating ice ages. The jagged<\/p>\n

hole offered a way to go. So who here is considering taking<\/p>\n

it? There are the birds on the hanging rope; world is<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

sidewise, I guess; who’s dangling on the line, baby? If he<\/p>\n

jerks they’ll jump off, their arms rustly with hundreds of<\/p>\n

black feathers like ratty sleeves; if, on the line he<\/p>\n

jerks involuntarily, the water pushing against his face like<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

a hand, the birds will dive toward rescue. The news collected in<\/p>\n

the bottom of the envelope like sediment, a black<\/p>\n

line. Around the pilings of the docks curly<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

rainbows bob like half-burnt flags; you want to fish<\/p>\n

them out. I’ll help peg them up on the off-white warehouse<\/p>\n

wall. Then comes the getting off gracefully; put down that beating<\/p>\n

tongue; it’ll flop a minute after but will relax, stretch<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

out flat like a dancer with a muscle in her back sore. Forced<\/p>\n

pause. The birds are coming back but the line is<\/p>\n

slack. They circle in a black band. And now? The curtains<\/p>\n

slap together on his reflection, sway over his emptied shoes.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

more air on the tracks<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Every word came out a prayer.<\/p>\n

At the top of the stratosphere a molecule shook loose.<\/p>\n

I invite the waters.<\/p>\n

There are many more colors that will stay still.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Suspicious? You think it might not be poison?<\/p>\n

Include here a soap bubble.<\/p>\n

The hearings dragged on past the listening.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s adopt it, stroke it, dress it in the enemy\u2019s colors.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I bite off your finger because it is in my mouth. Such things happen.<\/p>\n

The end of the world? Pretty close!<\/p>\n

Give me one and I will return one, or, if I feel up to it, carry it out.<\/p>\n

The last of the robed monks joined the line for the mic.<\/p>\n

In the back corner of the bad closet leans the black broom.<\/p>\n

The categories of revelation fill up to thirty-three tablets.<\/p>\n

Which were the beautiful monsters?<\/p>\n
