City nights.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

the flesh of the moon<\/p>\n

is a thin slice<\/p>\n

of apple: browning<\/p>\n

and fingered<\/p>\n

on a plate<\/p>\n

in a toddler\u2019s<\/p>\n

playroom.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

streets grubby,<\/p>\n

rain down slick;<\/p>\n

tears which weren\u2019t<\/p>\n

properly wiped.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For Dani<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

dani \u2013 forgive me; you\u2019re in<\/p>\n

another poem. and I hope<\/p>\n

it\u2019s the last one, but there\u2019s things<\/p>\n

there I’ll never get right. you,<\/p>\n

for example: we only met<\/p>\n

three times, and each one<\/p>\n

was quite different.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I tried to finish this \u2013 I did \u2013<\/p>\n

describing times<\/p>\n

in order. didn\u2019t work.<\/p>\n

I hope you’re still<\/p>\n

alive, and that we don’t meet ever,<\/p>\n

any time, in any field any-<\/p>\n

where, surrounded<\/p>\n

by any dandelions.<\/p>\n

Walking into town<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

people all over \u2013<\/p>\n

like dropping a jar<\/p>\n

from counter to clean<\/p>\n

kitchen tile; watching as coffee<\/p>\n

grains roll. I am one<\/p>\n

amongst thousands<\/p>\n

and we have nowhere to be. work<\/p>\n

sometimes on Monday.<\/p>\n

until then<\/p>\n

we’ll while time away<\/p>\n

making our lives seem<\/p>\n

worthwhile.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Buddha’s delight<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

it’s february. meal-<\/p>\n

time and chinese<\/p>\n

new year. my fiancee’s invited<\/p>\n

my family, some<\/p>\n

of her friends. can’t go<\/p>\n

home this year<\/p>\n

(covid, of course)<\/p>\n

so she wants them to see<\/p>\n

what new years<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

are otherwise<\/p>\n

like. and the table’s<\/p>\n

been pulled out \u2013 there\u2019s rice,<\/p>\n

there\u2019s some small bowls<\/p>\n

of vegetables.<\/p>\n

a marinade chicken,<\/p>\n

some marinade pork.<\/p>\n

a helping of tea<\/p>\n

and a helping of soup,<\/p>\n

and a scoop each of something<\/p>\n

called buddha’s delight.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

she sits here, delighted,<\/p>\n

while my white irish family<\/p>\n

pass bowls back and forth<\/p>\n

like trains going into<\/p>\n

a junction. my sister<\/p>\n

has travelled, is somewhat<\/p>\n

familiar \u2013 the rest<\/p>\n

are surprised and quite<\/p>\n

interested. polite at some<\/p>\n

times, other times<\/p>\n

enthusiastic;<\/p>\n

they know what’s expected<\/p>\n

by hosts.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

and around<\/p>\n

all these hanging<\/p>\n

red ornaments. these tea<\/p>\n

cups and bottles<\/p>\n

of half-finished wine.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Freshness and flavour<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

a sprinkle of snow \u2013 no<\/p>\n

not a sprinkle \u2013 just<\/p>\n

one of those days<\/p>\n

when the air<\/p>\n

takes some zest:<\/p>\n

a bit of a sparkle,<\/p>\n

a bit of an appetite,<\/p>\n

like a scratch on the back<\/p>\n

of a pocket-sized<\/p>\n

mirror and an edge<\/p>\n

to your breath;<\/p>\n

just some bite <\/em>there,<\/p>\n

you know? some<\/p>\n

freshness,<\/p>\n

some sparkling<\/p>\n

flavour. unsure<\/p>\n

what to wear<\/p>\n

you go jacket<\/p>\n

no gloves<\/p>\n

and the mountains<\/p>\n

to the south<\/p>\n

look blue,<\/p>\n
