The Walking Wounded<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I see us everywhere anymore,<\/p>\n

at the supermarket or the mall,<\/p>\n

moving slowly, often cane-less<\/p>\n

(old folks can be vain too) along<\/p>\n

a sidewalk like lost zombies, and<\/p>\n

of course every time I visit one<\/p>\n

of the plethora of doctors I rely<\/p>\n

upon to keep my cracking body<\/p>\n

and creaking heart working\u2026.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Why did I not see old people<\/p>\n

when I was young?<\/p>\n

They must have been there,<\/p>\n

in my world of swiftness and<\/p>\n

sex, of sprawling on a beach or<\/p>\n

dancing under the boardwalk<\/p>\n

or driving fast enough to<\/p>\n

challenge death itself—but<\/p>\n

when I saw old people—and it<\/p>\n

seemed rare back then\u2014it was<\/p>\n

like watching a scene from an<\/p>\n

old black-and-white movie,<\/p>\n

not quite real, even quaint—<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I liked old people and I loved<\/p>\n

my Nana and Pop-Pop, but only<\/p>\n

now in my 8th decade do I know<\/p>\n

how much they had to put up with<\/p>\n

in living a long life, how time has<\/p>\n

a tendency to whittle away your<\/p>\n

strength and confidence and grace,<\/p>\n

shrinking your bones, drying out<\/p>\n

your joints, slowing your brain<\/p>\n

and poking holes–oh, so many<\/p>\n

holes in your memory\u2026.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I am not as fond of old people<\/p>\n

now I am one\u2014it is the young<\/p>\n

I now see fondly\u2014<\/p>\n

but they can\u2019t see me\u2026.<\/p>\n
