And perhaps if we also promote them a little.<!--more--><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=justify>\nTo begin with, we will mention some works awarded in 2011 because the awards, even when they are controversial, they still help in outlining a certain domain. As long as they are not regarded as an exclusive criterion they can serve as a useful tool for the fiction reader.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=justify>\n<strong>VLADIMIR COLIN Awards <\/strong>for books published between 2008 and 2010.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=justify>\nThe Novel award was given to Sebastian A. Corn, for <em>The Healer <\/em>(<em>Vindec\u0103torul<\/em>, 2008); I would like to mention that Sebastian Corn is a complete writer and his works could compete at any time with those of the great authors in this genre. In my opinion, <em>The Empire of the Holy Graal (Imperiul Marelui Graal<\/em> ) would make a great competitor for Frank Herbert\u2019s <em>Dunes<\/em>. The Short Prose award went to Silviu Genescu for <em>Rock me Adolf, Adolf, Adolf <\/em>(2008) and the Short Fiction award was given to Doru Stoica for <em>Between Barriers <\/em>(<em>\u00centre bariere<\/em>, 2010). For the Non- Fiction category there have been awarded Dodo Ni\u0163\u0103 and Alexandru Ciubotariu \u2013 <em>The History of the Romanian Comic Book 1891- 2010 <\/em>(<em>Istoria benzii desenate rom\u00e2ne\u015fti<\/em>, 2010).<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=justify>\n<strong>GALILEO Awards. <\/strong>Best Volume published in 2010 award: Oliviu Cr\u00e2znic &#8211; \u2026 <em>And What Was Left Was the Nightmare <\/em>(<em>&#8230;\u015ei la sf<\/em><em>\u00e2<\/em><em>r\u015fit a mai r\u0103mas co\u015fmarul<\/em>), gothic novel. The Best Short Story published in 2010 award: Costi Guru \u2013 <em>Angels and Moths <\/em>(<em>\u00cengeri \u015fi molii<\/em><em>,<\/em> published in the second issue of <em>Galileo Science Fiction&amp;Fantasy <\/em>magazine). It should also be mentioned that the Romanian author Costi Guru, poorly known in our country outside the SF&amp;F community, is a highly appreciated writer in Canada being even published by <em>Ages of Wonder. <\/em>Among his successful works I should mention <em>Re\u0163etarium,<\/em><em> <\/em>a novel which would be loved by G.R.R. Martin\u2019s fans, along with the stories dedicated to the dacian vampire Cotys (a serious rival to Lestat) \u2013 <em>The Hotel of Saints (<\/em><em>Hotelul Sfin\u0163ilor<\/em><em>) <\/em>and <em>The Rash Seed (<\/em><em>S\u0103m\u00e2n\u0163\u0103 pripit\u0103<\/em><em>). <\/em>The Galileo award for the entire work was given to the legendary George Anania.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=justify>\n<strong>ION HOBANA Awards. <\/strong>The Book of the Year 2010 for SF genre: Cristian- Mihail Teodorescu \u2013 <em>S.F. Two (S.F. Doi); <\/em>The Book of the Year 2010 for Fantasy: Liviu Radu \u2013 <em>Waldemar\u2019s World (Lumea lui Waldemar); <\/em>The award for the entire literary work: Mircea Opri\u0163\u0103; The <em>Hope of the Year <\/em>award was given to a debutant, a 35 year old author at the beginning of his career: Bogdan C\u0103t\u0103lin Mereu\u0163\u0103 \u2013 <em>Virtual Fighters (<\/em><em>Lupt\u0103torii virtuali<\/em><em>). <\/em>Before going further on, for those who do not know: Liviu Radu is one of the most appreciated and prolific contemporary fiction writers, his novel <em>The Option (<\/em><em>Op\u0163iunea<\/em><em>)<\/em> being in my opinion one of the best ever written novels in our country and abroad; several other works of The Master of Stories can be found in his many volumes, whether they are short stories or novels; Mircea Opri\u0163\u0103 is also an international writer (and critic) and his novels among which <em>The Sign of the Unicorn (Semnul licornului<\/em> ) or <em>Sunday Stories (<\/em><em>Povestiri de duminic\u0103<\/em><em>) <\/em>are irrefutable marks in the high quality literature.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=justify>\n<strong>ARSFAN Awards <\/strong>for 2010. The Best SF Prose Novel, Ex Aequo: Cristian Mihail Teodorescu &#8211; <em>S.F. Two, <\/em>Adrian Buzdugan \u2013 <em>The Chapel of the Excommunicated (<\/em><em>Capela excomunica\u0163ilor<\/em><em>)<\/em><em>; <\/em>The Best SF Story, Ex Aequo: Silviu Genescu \u2013 <em>The Citizen Wells <\/em>(<em>Cet\u0103\u0163eanul<\/em><em> Wells<\/em>; published in the <em>Pangaia <\/em>anthology), Marian Tru\u0163\u0103 \u2013 <em>Cumania 2010 <\/em>(published in the second issue of <em>Galileo Science Fiction&amp;Fantasy <\/em>magasine); The Best SF Critical Review: Mircea Opri\u0163\u0103<em> \u2013 On the Distinctions of Romanian Anticipation <\/em>(<em>Despre dist<\/em><em>inc\u0163iile anticipa\u0163iei rom\u00e2ne\u015fti<\/em>; published in <em>Biblioteca Nova<\/em>); The Best SF Debut: Drago\u015f Meri\u015fca \u2013 <em>My Stories From When I Didn\u2019t Know How to Write (<\/em><em>Pove\u015ftile mele de pe vremea c\u00e2nd nu \u015ftiam s\u0103 scriu<\/em><em>); <\/em>The Best Comic Book: Jup ( Lucian Amarii) \u2013 <em>SuperCostel and The Brotherhood of\u00a0 The Black Cats (<\/em><em>SuperCostel \u015fi Confreria pisicilor negre<\/em><em>); <\/em>The Best SF Short Film: Adrian Chifu \u2013 <em>Dystobiotics Worlds. <\/em><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=justify>\nBesides Mircea Opri\u0163\u0103 about whom we have said a few words earlier, among the prize-winners we should also mention Marian Tru\u0163\u0103, a redoubtable writer, highly appreciated by the public, critics and also by his brethren: <em>The Time of Giving Up (<\/em><em>Vremea renun\u0163\u0103rii<\/em><em>) <\/em>volume is viewed as a strong pillar in the history of romanian contemporary SF&amp;F.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=justify>\n<strong>EUROCON Awards. <\/strong>The only award Romania got at Eurocon ( The European Convention of SF&amp;F) was Encouragement Award, given to \u015etefania Czeller, a young author whose career can already be called fulminating.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=justify>\n<strong>Other awards. <\/strong>For <em>The Chapel of the Excommunicated<\/em>, Adrian Buzdugan also got Debute Prize from the <strong>BUCHAREST WRITERS\u2019 ASSOCIATION <\/strong>and from <strong>MORNING STAR<\/strong> magazine.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=justify>\nOliviu Cr\u00e2znic also received <strong>PROLITERATURA 2011 <\/strong>Prize for The Most Interesting Novel category: the same gothic <em>&#8230;<\/em><em> And What Was Left Was the Nightmare, <\/em>written as a Romanian answer to the abroad vampire related works (classic or moderns).<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=justify>\nLadislau Daradici won the Short Story Prize awarded by <strong>THE WRITERS\u2019 UNION<\/strong> from <strong>ALBA-HUNEDOARA Branch, <\/strong>for <em>Maria, Your Life Is a Flame <\/em>(<em>Maria, via\u0163a ta e o flac\u0103r\u0103, <\/em>2010).<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=justify>\nFinally, Alexandru Ioan Despina won Second Honorable Mention for the Prose category in the <strong>AGATHA GRIGORESCU BACOVIA<\/strong> National Literary Competition, third prize in the <strong>MIHAIL SADOVEANU <\/strong>National Prose Competition and first prize for the Prose category in the <strong>MO\u015eTENIREA V\u0102C\u0102RE\u015eTILOR<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>National Literary Competition. In the fantasy area, Alexandru Ioan Despina is also known for his articles of literary analysis on the stories published on-line and in the trade journals.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=justify>\nI consider that Florin P\u00eetea is also worth mentioning, who received the title of Doctor in English Philology with a thesis on cyberpunk literature, <em>Art Wasn&#8217;t Quite Crime \u2013 The Context, Themes and Consequences of (Post)Cyberpunk Fiction<\/em> (published in 2010). He is also a well known cyberpunk writer and his novel <em>Gangland <\/em>in one of the important achievements of the genre.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=justify>\nAs we can see from all of the above, the contemporary Romanian literature has what to offer to those interested in high quality novels and stories. In the future articles we will bring into focus more names and works, hoping to steer up your interest towards what is going on in our country in this domain.
